How is Fody Garlic Infused Olive Oil Low FODMAP if garlic is high in FODMAPs?

Garlic contains fructans (oligosaccharides), making them high in FODMAPs. These fructans are water-soluble, and would therefore leech out into a water-based substance such as a soup broth. Since water and oil don’t mix, these fructans in garlic will not leech out in oil. Therefore, it’s safe to infuse the essence of garlic in oil, and enjoy the flavor with none of the symptoms.

FAQ: Low FODMAP Foods & IBS

We answer common questions about FODMAP foods - What are FODMAPs? What foods contain FODMAPS? What is a FODMAPS diet? - and IBS in the sections below!

I think I have IBS. What do I do?

First and foremost, please see your doctor for a definite diagnosis of IBS. It is very important to rule out other serious conditions that may share symptoms with IBS. If you have IBS and need guidance on IBS foods to avoid, please seek out the help of a registered dietitian.

What is the Low FODMAP diet?

The Low FODMAP diet is an evidence-based approach to relieve symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

What are FODMAPs?

According to Monash University, FODMAPs are a group of dietary sugars that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. FODMAPs can trigger digestive issues including gas, bloating, distension, abdominal discomfort, pain, diarrhea and/or constipation by some people, especially those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). FODMAP stands for: Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides And Polyols.

What foods contain FODMAPs?

There are 5 types of FODMAPs that exist in the food we eat. They are: fructose, lactose, fructans, galacto-oligosaccharides and sugar alcohols. Food can contain one or more types of FODMAPs. FODMAPs are found in many foods: from various fruit and vegetables, to milk and wheat. It can be confusing to identify FODMAP foods, and you may find many different contradicting opinions and low FODMAP food charts out there. For more information on high and low FODMAP foods check out our High and Low FODMAP Food Charts.

Is there a Low FODMAP serving size that is acceptable?

Yes, but the “safe” Low FODMAP serving size is different for every food. We highly recommend using the Monash University Low FODMAP App to see all food ingredients and their serving sizes. As the diet is quantity based, please check the serving sizes on the label of each Fody product or by referencing the Monash Low FODMAP App. Note: One serving of the product can assist with following the Monash University Low FODMAP diet™. A strict Low FODMAP diet should not be commenced without supervision from a healthcare professional.

Is a Low FODMAP diet for life?

No, there is a re-introduction phase where you will determine which higher FODMAP foods can be tolerated by your body. Please discuss re-introduction with your dietitian. Learn more about the three stages of the diet on Monash FODMAP App
Note: Check out our detailed list of FODMAP FAQ's.
